We look forward to Tanya’s efforts. In fact, Tanya’s candidacy will challenge the prevailing media mindset about the views of typical Ontarians, who have been subjected to incremental limitations on our cherished freedoms. We are hopeful that a fair treatment of her candidacy will bring serious attention to matters of grave consequence to this province, and to Canada.

Demanding that someone participate in perceived wrongdoing demands the submission of intellect, will and conscience, reducing the person to the status of a thing, to a tool to be used by others, to servitude that cannot be reconciled with principles of equality. It is an assault on human dignity that deprives physicians of their essential humanity.

The Prime Minister’s position at “drawing a line” on prolife positions is utterly unacceptable, since it violates the very Charter of Rights and Freedoms which is cited by the government as the basis of its policy. It allows certain policy positions to trump constitutional protections. It suggests that in order to receive government benefits, compliance with the government’s position is required. It actually serves to suppress free speech and association rights, by requiring compelled speech, or silence, in compliance with the ideology of the governing party.

We have warned in the past that the position the court will take on Trinity Western will have serious implications on provincial education rights, the position of Catholic or private schools, or the status of religious charities.

The Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL) joins the many parents, independent schools, and the Alberta Catholic School Trustees’ Association (ACSTA) in opposition to Bill 24, An Act to Support Gay-Straight Alliances, which passed into law on November 15.

CCRL president Phil Horgan, and executive director Christian Elia, appeared before the Standing Committee on General Government of the Ontario legislature to speak against the “Bubble Zone” Bill’s overreach and Charter infringement vis a vis freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of religion.

Christian Elia the CCRL’s executive director was presented with the Order of Malta’s Bronze Medal Pro Merito Melitensi in recognition of having conferred honour and prestige on the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM) through the Hunger Patrol program.
