TORONTO, ON July 30, 2015 – The Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL) expresses profound disappointment today on the unexpected and unwelcome decision by Health Canada to approve the controversial abortion procuring drug RU-486. The CCRL has previously written to federal health minister Rona Ambrose asking that the abortion drug RU-486 not be approved. Our position has not changed regarding this new addition to the abortion landscape in Canada.

The Catholic Civil Rights League upholds the sanctity of all human life from conception to natural death. The addition of RU-486 to Canada’s abortion options is of particular concern. Since the administration of RU-486 entails women completing their abortions at home, there are safety concerns that are simply not being addressed. No public hearings have been conducted in Canada, either with medical experts or members of the public.

It is troubling that media reports are referring to RU-486 as the “gold standard” of abortion drugs. Instead of referring to gold standards in an industry that claims the lives of 100, 000 Canadians each year, we ought to be working together to give women in crisis pregnancies real options and supports for their babies, not easier care free ways to assist in the loss of life, particularly when it may not be in the best interests of their own health as well.
