Toronto, ON April 21, 2019 – “Whom are you looking for?”
Variations of this question come from the mouth of Jesus earlier in the Gospel of John, for example at John 1:38 in the context of becoming a disciple.
The most poignant repetition of this question comes again in the Gospel of John read on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, first from the Garden of Gethsemane to the soldiers charged to arrest Him (18:4-7), and then outside of the empty tomb to Mary Magdalene (20:15).
These questions may also be asked of us today and every day.
In each case, the answer is Jesus Christ.
We are living in a time of spiritual combat. As a Catholic advocacy organization, we are so aware of attacks on Christians around the world, of the attacks on Catholic churches by arson, or other desecrations, over the past few months, particularly during this past Lenten season.
The Catholic Church is experiencing the exposure of sinfulness at the episcopal and priestly levels.
The response to that sinfulness, and to so much of what ails the world remains Jesus Christ. He has taken on our suffering, and he redeemed us by His death and resurrection.
In the face of attacks, both visible and invisible, whether far away or in our own homes and neighbourhoods, we are charged to know our faith, to profess it, confidently bear witness to it, and to spread it… (CCC, para. 1816).
On behalf of the Catholic Civil Rights League (CCRL) and our national Board, may you find joy in the Risen Christ, who remains the answer to all our troubles.
A Blessed Easter to you all!
