Oshawa 2009

The Star reports that a 12-year old girl, and two teenagers have been arrested in connection with breaking headstones at St. Gregory’s Catholic Cemetery in Oshawa.

In the middle of the night, around 3:30 a.m. the three vandals lay to waste, multiple headstones. Some were broken off their stands, some in pieces, and flowers were taken.

Durham police arrested the three at 3:30 a.m. In total, 50 headstones were vandalized, reports Cemetery spokesperson, Steve Farrell. He also states that because the cemetery is historic, the older monuments will be harder to replace because they are so old, as opposed to the newer ones.

The total cost of the damages is around $15,000. The three individuals- the 12-year old girl from Oshawa, a 15-year old boy from Bowmanville and a 17-year old girl from Markham have all been charged with mischief over $5,000.
