The closed down Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Parish Centre in Lingan, Nova Scotia was completely burned down on August 17, reports SaltWire.

Three fire departments, Scotchtown, New Waterford and Glace Bay, were called to the church at roughly 3:45 a.m. By the time Scotchtown Fire Department firefighters arrived at the scene, the church was engulfed in flames states the Fire Department Chief Raymond Eksal. The only structural part to survive the flames was the floor of the building, and later on an excavator came to start clean up.

Eksal states that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

The church has a very long history, having been 126 years old and built after the first church also burnt down in a fire in the year 1897. The church was out of use for over a decade, and the parishioners had been moved over to St. Leonard Church for services. With all these changes in management and ownership the church hadn’t been looked over and was in disrepair with holes in the roof.
