OTTAWA, December 6, 2007 (CCRL) – A Parliamentary subcommittee has ruled the Unborn Victims of Crime Act, introduced by Conservative MP Ken Epp, ‘votable’, meaning that it will be able to come before the full House of Commons for a vote. This is good news for the pro-life community. The Catholic Civil Rights League urges its members and supporters to contact their MPs with messages of support for the bill.
A similar bill proposed last year by Conservative MP Leon Benoit was deemed non-votable at the subcommittee stage. If passed, the law would allow criminal charges to be laid in the death or injury of an unborn child when the child’s mother is the victim of a crime. The League has always supported such legislation as a needed step in recognizing the personhood of the unborn child and the dignity of women.
