The League issued its 2016 Annual Report on October 26, 2016 at the CCRL’s AGM in Toronto.
The Lion of Münster: The Bishop Who Roared Against the Nazis
This talk was delivered on November 23, 2016 at the Church of the Holy Family in Toronto, which is the seat of the Oratorian Fathers of Saint Philip Neri. The occasion was the launch of a new book, “The Lion of Münster: The Bishop Who Roared Against the Nazis,” by Fr. Dan Utrecht of the Oratory.
Nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers…
The most important reason for post-election sanity is a greater reliance on God the Holy Trinity and Mary and the Saints.
Since I have been a Catholic I have come to see that the real hope of mankind is not in a politician but the figure of Jesus Christ.
Pain
So I have vowed to once again take my pain around the city from church to church. To whoever will have me. And I will stand there on my cane, wince because it hurts, sweat at times because the morphine makes me feel ill and badger my Catholic audiences into understanding that the battle against evil has just begun.
Victory for TWU in BC: Triumph for Robust and Authentic Pluralism in Canada
We are particularly pleased that the BC Court of Appeal made its unanimous decision in part having recourse to submissions which the CCRL has used numerous times when defending religious and conscientious freedom or the role of faith in the public square. We continue to maintain that a robust concept of pluralism in Canada is a key component of a healthy democracy, and of civil society. Religious beliefs cannot be subjugated to non-belief in our public debates.

Ross Douthat and 1 Corinthians
Mr. Douthat said that those who have a gift for confronting conflict, for fighting back, should do so. Those who have a gift for prayer should follow that path. And those who decide to go through school “with whimsy,” not getting caught up in intra-student battles, should also do what their heart tells them is right.
The Right Side of History?
Here in North America, and I suspect most of Western Europe, we are definitely on the wrong side of history. And thank God we are. Someone on occasion has to yell, “Stop!” Someone has to question what becomes so-called common knowledge. Someone has to believe that not everything that has endured going back to our Jewish roots needs to be fixed.
The Assumption
I am writing this on the morning after the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I attended Mass at Holy Family in Toronto last night. The church was packed. And those who were there are likely feeling the same glow I feel this morning. Of course, the Mass was beautiful. The choir could have easily substituted for the choir of angels that will hopefully greet us one day when our time here is done. The billows of smoke, smell of incense, and the prayers for the feast day all added to the mystery of one of our most radical beliefs.
Covering all of the Bases in Prolife Work
I believe what we need is to strengthen the social safety net for young women who find themselves pregnant. We need to do more to provide them with solid reasons to have their babies — beyond that it is the right thing to do or the Church says it is so.
